I went to check out Stone, a club run by John Zorn, on Sunday night. Tonic, Zorn's last club endeavor, had to close down this past April (they weren't making enough to pay the $10,000/month rent). both Tonic and Stone made/make a point not to sell food and drink, wanting to focus on music-- but i think they could really use the money that would come from drinks. people get thirsty. they can still listen...
The first set was So Percussion, the group that Doug, the percussion teacher at Dartmouth, plays with. He just had a baby though! so he wasn't playing that night. They did some John Cage, whose birthday it was last week, and also some originals. Here are some blind contour drawings from their playing. pencil on paper, 9''x12''.

Use Gravity (original)
piano, tearing leafy vegetables, rubbing brick wall

Go (original)
mallets, woodblock, prepared piano, glockenspiel

Branches, Childhood Trees, Piece for Marcel Duchamp (Cage)
amplified cactus, breaking branches/leaves of varied freshness, piano
The second set was Bad Stravinsky (led by Ted Reichman), a chamber music group with viola, cello, accordian and saxophone/clarinet, playing music from Jean-Luc Godard films. They were less fun to draw because they didn't move around as much as So, but were great players. The So folks asked me to e-mail them the sketches after the concert! to think someone actually wants my scribbles.

hi kim,
I'm the leader of bad stravinsky, thanks for the kind words and thanks for drawing- that is really cool. I didn't see you doing that at the gig.
all best,
ted
Hey Kimmy! You sound like me the economics major! People can drink and listen too. You are absolutely correct. Hey musicians need to eat too!
