I visited Dartmouth this weekend and saw Company Ea Sola perform Drought and Rain Vol. 2 at the Hop in Hanover. It turns out that I had met the composer, Nguyen Xuan Son, in Vietnam (the percussionist for the band Dai-Lam-Linh) just a few weeks ago. I didn't realize he was the composer until seeing the program notes that night. Quite strange and slightly disorienting seeing him again so unexpectedly soon- but encouraging at the same time. Hung out with him the next afternoon and then met Ea Sola thanks to my dancer friend Eben Bein. Eben and I have been doing some improvising together, both contact-improvisation and also some piano-dance improvising. I promised Ea Sola I'd take Eben to Vietnam at some point. We had a tri-lingual conversation going on in English-Vietnamese-French... the whole experience was kind of bizarre and surreal.
